A Thank You from AWPCA President
February 2, 2010
Dear Members:

I would like to personally thank you all for your participation in the Alabama Water Pollution Control Association 2009 Annual Conference recently held in Dothan.  Thank you to the vendors for the sponsorship of booths and door prizes. Thank you to the educators for the valuable information provided to our membership. Thank you to the membership for traveling to Dothan. Thank you to the Dothan Utilities staff for handling all of the details. Thank you to Dothan’s IT Department for the projectors, screens, and laptops. Thank you to the Executive Board for keeping this Association alive. I know you get into trouble by calling names, but there are so many people that worked feverishly to make the Dothan Conference a success - The Dothan Convention Center staff, Donald Smith Company who provided the food for the Bar-B-Que, Water World staff for hosting, and the senior staff of Dothan Wastewater Treatment Division who just grinned and bared the countless tasks requested of them. Your love and support was greatly appreciated and I look forward to my opportunity to return the favor.

I ask for your continued support as the AWPCA Annual Conference travels to Birmingham in 2010. Jarrad Shotts and his staff are preparing a GRAND event for us at the Ross Bridge Resort.  This resort is part of the Robert Trent Jones trail; so I hope all you golfers have made plans to attend. Please ask the vendors in your area to support this Association with the sponsorship of a booth. And remember what our parents used to tell us, ‘one hand washes the other”. So I also would like to encourage the AWPCA membership to support our vendors by registering early.  Registration information can be obtained by clicking the link to the left (conference/meeting).

The AWPCA is still working for the operators of this state. We partnered with Utility Engineering Consultants to offer convenient continuing education training at an affordable rate. We request your support to keep this training available by asking that you please attend classes when they are offered in your area.

Again, I say thank you for your support of the Dothan Annual Conference.
Sincerely,

Roscell Stringer, President

On-Line Certification Overview

Beginning in June 2006 individuals will be given the opportunity to take an on-line water or wastewater certification examination. The examination fee whether paper or computer will be the same ($150.00). The computer examinations will be administered at an H&R Office, in the cities of Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham and Huntsville, twice a day, morning and afternoon, 5 days a week during working hours. The applicant will apply for the examination using the ADEM Water and Wastewater Operator Exam Application, Form No. 505 which is the same application for the hardcopy examination. The applicant will need to write ‘computer” on the “Exam date preferred” line to let ADEM know that a computer examination is being requested. Upon approval, the Applied Measurement Professionals (AMP), the proctors of the on-line examination, will mail a post card to the applicant noting examination dates, locations and the applicant’s individual examination code. The applicant will need to contact the AMP to schedule the precise date; time and location the applicant would like to take the examination. At the agreed upon examination date the applicant will need to bring the post card, with the examination code and a picture identification only to the examination site. The AMP will provide all other supplies needed. The applicant will have the opportunity to take a practice examination, on the computer, before the actual examination is given or until he/she feels comfortable with the computer examination format. When the applicant is ready to take the official examination he/she will begin by pushing the examination start button at which time the official examination time will start. Each examinee is still allotted 3 hours to complete the examination. The examinee will have the opportunity to skip questions to be returned to at a later time and the chance to review all examination answers within the allotted 3 hours or until they hit the submit button. The full examination of 100 questions, will have to be answered, the examination will not stop once a grade of 70% has been achieved. The examinee will be notified onsite at the conclusion of the examination whether a pass or fail grade has been awarded. If the student fails he/she will receive a numbered score and a break down of the topics missed. If a student passes he/she will receive an official letter from the ADEM onsite to be submitted with the ADEM Operator Experience Verification, Form No. 506 and fee before a certificate will be issued. If the examinee fails the examination he/she could resubmit an application immediately and theoretically re-test within 2 weeks. Computer examinations are not required to meet a 30 day deadline for application.
