THE CHARLES W. WHITE AWARD

The Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association established the Charles W. White Award in 1967.

 This Award is given each year to a member of The Alabama Water and Pollution Control Association for outstanding service to the field of Public Water Supply in Alabama and for their support of the goals and activities of the AWPCA.

The first award was given in 1969 to Mr. W. H. Gilmore.

This award memorializes the dedicated efforts made by Mr. Charles White in promoting safe drinking water, the water supply industry, and the training for water works operators.

Mr. White attended the University of Alabama and the Colorado School of Mines; and at the end of World War I, he was a Lieutenant in the United States Army.

In 1933, the Alabama State Health Department employed him as a District Engineer.

 He later attended Harvard, where he received his Masters of Science degree in 1939.

Mr. White became Director of the Water Supply Division for the State of Alabama in 1946 and was very active in the formation of the Alabama – Mississippi Section of AWWA where he served as Secretary-Treasurer for many years.

He was also very active in the formation of Alabama Water and Sewerage Association, AWPCA’S predecessor, and assisted in conducting the First Annual Short Course School in 1946 .

Although, Mr. Charles W. White is no longer alive, he was known and respected by those associated or connected in any way with the Water Supply Industry in Alabama; therefore his insight, faithfulness, and devotion in supporting the drinking water industry and the public health of Alabama Citizens continues through the presentation of this award!
